It is generally accepted that around 1992 is when Rolex phased out the open 6 and 9 and started the closed numbers on the date wheels. Be on the lookout for an open 6 and 9, if that is really important to you, and acquire through the years.I would also try to source a bezel insert with matching patina if that one is really bothering you.
I heavily prefer the open 6 and 9. On some of the better TD sites you can search "open 6" and it will show you the watches that may have it. Otherwise, you have to get lucky since I see a lot of dealers will use the same date like 28 and you have no idea.Here is the general progression of the date wheels based on year and distinguishing characteristics: Early 1960’s to Middle 1960’s: round 3, closed 6 & 9, and flat 7. Middle 1960’s to Late 1960’s: round 3, closed 6 & 9, and hooked 7. Early/Mid 1970’s: flat 3 and open 6 & 9.
