Looking at your photo: the lower portion of the guard looks gapped to the case: thats the screws being loose.
The adjustments consist of several delicate operations of the greatest importance, including centring and levelling the balance spring, accurately setting up the escapement, putting the balance wheel in beat and adjusting the lever. The gasket is compressed with the crown guard lever ensuring water tightness. As long as your gasket lubricant is there it will allow for winding albeit difficultly. As soon as the gasket lubricant is compromised you will start destroying the gasket necessitating replacement.
